Hello, everyone! Today, we're excited to show you how to upgrade the infotainment screen on a 2011-2019 Ford Explorer to include CarPlay. This upgrade will modernize your vehicle and enhance your driving experience. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Preparation

First, gather all the necessary tools for the installation:

  • Trim removal tools
  • Screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead)
  • The new infotainment screen with CarPlay
  • RCA cables, 4G antenna, GPS antenna, power cables, and other connectors

Step 2: Remove the Silver Trim

Using your trim removal tools, pry open the silver trim around the infotainment system.

Step 3: Loosen and Remove Screws

Loosen all the screws that hold the original car’s panel in place. Remove the original panel and unplug the connectors on the back.

Step 4: Remove the Original Screen and Head Unit

Loosen the screws securing the original screen and head unit (eight screws in total). Remove the head unit and disconnect the three connectors on the back. Then, remove the original screen and disconnect the two connectors on the back.

Step 5: Remove the Original Air Vents

Loosen the screws and remove the original air vents. Attach the air vents to the new screen.

Step 6: Connect the Wires to the New Screen

Start connecting the wires:

  • RCA cable
  • 4G antenna
  • GPS antenna
  • Another 4G antenna
  • Radio antenna
  • Original car's USB cable
  • Power cable: Connect it to the communication port on the back of the head unit

Step 7: Connect the Button Panel

Connect the button panel and the black power connector. Connect the video input cable and the plug to the reverse light cable on the power harness. Connect the power plug to the original car's plug.

Step 8: Install the New Screen

Connect the original car's USB cable to the back of the screen and the radio antenna. Connect the original car's plugs to the power harness slots, matching their respective sizes. Once everything is connected, install the new screen and secure it with four screws.

Step 9: Reinstall the Silver Trim

Reinstall the silver trim around the new screen.

Step 10: Initial Setup and Configuration

After the successful installation, the air conditioning might not work initially. Enter the factory settings and protocol setup. Select the correct brand, car model, and year, and confirm. Connect to the internet the first time you use it. Once set up, the steering wheel controls and air conditioning will work.

Step 11: Test the New System

The upgraded system supports the original car's reverse camera, local or online music, sound settings adjustments, video playback, automatic radio tuning, internet browsing, Bluetooth calling, and wireless CarPlay.

To connect wireless CarPlay, pair your phone with the car unit via Bluetooth, and it will automatically connect. You can use the voice assistant for calls, music, and navigation.
