Hey everyone! Today, we're diving into an exciting project: upgrading the center control screen on a 2010-2017 Mercedes CLS. This upgrade will breathe new life into your car's interior, adding modern functionality and a sleek look. Let's walk through the steps together.
Tools You'll Need
Before we get started, make sure you have the following tools prepared:
- Screwdrivers (both flat-head and Phillips)
- Trim removal tools
- Socket wrench set
Having these tools ready will make the process smoother and help avoid any unnecessary delays.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Removing the Passenger Side Cover
Start by removing the cover on the passenger side. This will expose the screws underneath.
Step 2: Unscrewing and Loosening
Next, unscrew the screws under the cover. Also, loosen the screw inside the glove box. This step is crucial for accessing the components we need to upgrade.
Step 3: Removing the Original Screen
Now, unscrew the two screws holding the original screen. Carefully remove the screen and disconnect the two plugs on its back. Keep these screws safe as we'll need them later.
Step 4: Handling the Air Vent Panel
Remove the panel of the original air vent. There are three plugs on the back that need to be disconnected. Be mindful of the triangular clip on the left side of the vent panel—it can be tricky to remove. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry it open from below and release it.
Step 5: Removing the Main Unit
Next, unscrew the two screws holding the original main unit and remove it. Disconnect the side plug, power plug, and optical fiber cable from the main unit.
Step 6: Installing the New Screen Hardware
Unscrew the four screws holding the original screen bracket and remove the bracket. Now, it's time to install the new screen's support hardware and base. Leave the original LVDS plug and white power plug exposed as we'll route some cables here.
Step 7: Connecting New Components
Connect the speaker plug and insert the original optical fiber into the back of the new power supply unit. Then, insert the new power supply unit into the original main unit. Connect the black female plug of the new power supply to the original main unit plug.
Step 8: Handling the AUX Audio Output
Since the original car doesn't have an AUX audio output, we'll use an AUX box. Connect the AUX plug on the power cable to this box and then connect the other plug to the car's USB port. The blue light on the box should come on, indicating it's working.
Step 9: Reassembling
Reinstall the main unit by connecting the side plug and securing the two screws on top. Reconnect the three plugs on the air vent panel and reinstall the air vent. Secure the glove box screws and side screws, then reinstall the panel.
Step 10: Final Connections
Connect the blue LEDs plug and white power plug to the back of the new screen. Remove the two clips from the original bracket and attach them to the new base. Install the new screen and secure it with screws.
Step 11: Configuration
With the hardware in place, we need to configure the USB box. Enter the original system's multimedia settings and select USB AX. Now, you can play music with the Android system, make Bluetooth calls, and test the steering wheel controls to ensure everything works perfectly.
Features of the New System
The upgraded system supports a variety of features:
- Door open reminders
- Reversing camera
- Real-time air conditioning data sync
- Digital dashboard
- Local and online video playback
- Map navigation
- App installation
- Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto
- Voice assistant for calls, music, and navigation
And that's a wrap! Your Mercedes CLS now has a modern, functional center control screen with a plethora of new features.
