Hey there, car enthusiasts! Today, we’re diving into an exciting project—upgrading the control screen on a 2013-2018 Mercedes-Benz A-Class. If you’re ready to bring a modern touch to your ride, follow along as we walk you through the process step by step. This transformation will enhance your car's functionality and aesthetic appeal, making your driving experience even better.
Tools and Preparation
Before we get started, make sure you have all the necessary tools. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Hook tool (for removing air vents)
- Screwdrivers
- New 12.3-inch screen and its cables
It’s essential to prepare according to your specific situation to ensure a smooth installation.
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
1. Remove the Air Vents
Using the hook tool, carefully remove both air vents. There’s no need to dismantle the middle one. Inside each air vent, you’ll find a screw—unscrew them, but be cautious not to drop the screws.
2. Dismantle the Original Host Unit
Next, we’ll remove the original host unit. Note that the silver trim isn’t part of the host, so you don’t need to remove it. Carefully take out the host unit and disconnect all the plugs from the sides and back.
3. Remove the Original Screen
Now, we’re dismantling the original screen. There are two screws securing the screen. Once these screws are removed, lift the screen upwards and disconnect all the cables from the back.
4. Prepare for the New Screen
The original screen’s base has two layers. Start by removing the first layer. Then, loosen the screws and remove the second layer.
5. Install the 12.3-Inch Screen
Take the power cable for the new screen and thread it from the main unit’s position, pulling the white end out at the screen’s location. Reinstall the second layer of the original screen’s base and secure it with screws. Attach the blue LVDS and white power connectors to the back of the 12.3-inch screen and install it.
6. Reconnect and Reinstall
Reconnect the plugs on the back of the main unit and align the new power connector with the original car’s connector. Plug the other end into the back of the original main unit. After everything is set, reinstall the original main unit. Re-tighten the screws inside the air vents and reattach the air vents.
Testing and Features
With the installation process complete, it’s time to test the functionality of the new screen. Here’s what you can expect:
- Retains Original Car System: The new unit keeps all the original functionalities intact, including the radio and steering wheel controls.
- Air Conditioning Information: The screen synchronizes the air conditioning information in real time.
- Dashboard Functions: Supports multiple color themes and dashboard functions.
- CarPlay and Android Auto: Pair your phone’s Bluetooth with the car’s Bluetooth to connect to CarPlay or Android Auto. You can make calls, listen to music, use maps for navigation, and access other smartphone apps.
- Video Playback and Split-Screen: Enjoy video playback and split-screen functionality, allowing the driver to view maps while the passenger watches videos.
- Browser Access: Stay updated with the latest news or watch movies during breaks.
- Music Playback: Adjust the sound tone and other playback effects to your liking.
