MY DIY ADVENTURE: FITTING A LARGE SCREEN INTO MY FORD FOCUS

Hey car lovers! Today, I'm thrilled to share my recent DIY adventure where I managed to fit a large infotainment screen into my Ford Focus, which originally didn't come with one. It's been a year of driving this car, and when I stumbled upon a Volkswagen infotainment unit, I just knew I had to try integrating it into my Focus.

Discovery and Preparation

While surfing the internet, I hit the jackpot by discovering that the Volkswagen 280 main unit could be adapted to several popular models, including the Suzuki Swift, Honda Civic, and yes, my Ford Focus. It felt like a stroke of genius and I couldn’t help but laugh at my own luck!

Determined, I dove into finding tutorials and guides. These systems are often customized, which really got me excited but also meant that installation instructions weren't readily available. However, giving up wasn’t an option.

Meeting a Mentor and Tackling the Installation

After relentless searching, I met a Civic owner who was not only experienced but also willing to walk me through the details. He explained that fitting the Volkswagen unit into my Focus would require some destructive modifications, including cutting the original mount and the circuit board to make everything fit. Additionally, specialized panel decoders, a backup camera, and wiring harnesses were needed.

The Gutsy Move

With all the required components gathered, I embarked on the transplant. The main unit was fixed into the new panel, sealed securely with adhesive. Sourcing the wiring harness, camera, and decoder turned out to be easier than anticipated.

I took one last look at the old CD player, which had a certain mechanical charm and excellent sound quality. Nonetheless, I was ready for an upgrade.

Installation Process

The original panel of the Focus was held by clips, which I removed using basic tools. Unscrewing the four corners of the CD player allowed me to pull out the entire unit and disconnect it. Then, I connected the new system to the car’s existing wiring harness and powered it up to test — and it worked beautifully!

Final Touches and Testing

After confirming the system's functions, including smooth operation, Bluetooth audio, USB connectivity, and wired phone support, I proceeded to wire and install the backup camera. My brother assisted by checking the camera angle, and despite his laughter (reason unknown!), the image response was quick and clear.

The system retained all essential features like sound adjustment (bass, mid, treble), speed-sensitive volume control, and notably, the sound quality was impressive, perfectly driving the Focus’s speakers.

Wrapping Up

The process ended successfully, with the new system integrating well into the Focus, both functionally and aesthetically. For those who love their vehicles and enjoy a hands-on challenge, this kind of project can be incredibly satisfying.
